Lohen Closed Deck Forged Crate Engine N14 - Config 4
Optional Extras
Lohen offers a range of extras to a selection of Lohen Forged engines to allow customisation.
Bottom End Balancing
Balancing of the crankshaft is important when building a performance engine. Weight out of balance from the centre point has a direct relationship to engine speed so, for those pushing the MINI engine harder, it is vital the crankshaft is balanced to improve durability of the engine and, in particular, engine bearings, reducing engine vibration and improving performance. Further to this Lohen weight matches pistons and connecting rods to provide a complete balancing service.
Choice of Camshaft
Lohen offers MINI OEM camshafts as standard but this can be upgraded to the Schrick performance inlet and exhaust camshafts. The Schrick camshafts are profiled to increase the duration the valves are open. This increases the volume of air and fuel entering the cylinders and allows for a greater amount of power to be developed.
About Lohen Crate Engines
Lohen has used experience and knowledge of the MINI N14 engine (EP6 engine platform) to produce a remanufactured performance Crate Engine that strengthens the areas we see as common failure points from our tuning experience. The Lohen N14 Crate Engine is suitable for the MINI Cooper S 2007 – 2010 or MINI JCW 2007 – 2012 and is supplied on an exchange basis.
All engines are re-built in-house by Lohen to OEM or higher specification (based on the components used) from donor units that have been checked for tolerances and overall condition. Cylinder bores are checked for ovality and are either honed or bored-and-honed for the right size piston to the correct tolerance. Cranks are checked for size, wear and damage before they are re-used and, where appropriate, balanced to 0.1gram.
Depending on engine spec Lohen then uses Forged Pistons and Con rods (based on build specification) to strengthen the bottom end of the engine. The N14 short block is assembled using new piston rings, Mahle Motorsport bearings throughout as well as ARP bolt and stud kits.
Heads are checked for straightness, then pressure tested as well as having the cam tolerances checked. They are reassembled either with stock components or with uprated such as Steel Intake Valves, Inconel Exhaust Valves, Beehive Springs, Titanium Retainers.
All re-usable engine components are either ultrasonically cleaned or soda blasted following inspection and all engines are re-assembled using brand new gaskets, seals and chains.
Please note - Lohen Crate Engines are supplied as timed-up bare units without sump, oil pump, rocker cover or any other bolt-on ancillaries. The engines are therefore shipped dry and require final assembly and fluids prior to installation and starting.
If required, Lohen can supply a fully built engine for an additional charge. We also offer professional in-house installation and running in service at our workshop.
Exchange Donor Unit Surcharge
Lohen will apply a surcharge to every engine sold unless a donor unit is supplied and it is deemed to be in re-buildable condition.
Why do we apply a surcharge?
A surcharge is charged because Lohen recondition and re-use certain components, such as the head, crank and the crank case. We do this to reduce costs to customer and components will only be used if they pass strict inspection criteria. Any wearable components are completely replaced in the upgrade process.
How it works
The surcharge applies when a donor engine is not supplied back to Lohen or the condition of the donor engine is deemed by Lohen to be beyond re-buildable (i.e. major damage to head, crank, block bores or external parts of the engine.)
Once the donor engine is received Lohen will assess and measure the unit for tolerances and issue any appropriate refund of the surcharge within 7-10 working days. Should certain components within the donor engine be deemed unusable the surcharge will be only partially refunded. Please contact the sales team for full information.
The piston compression ratio is 9.5:1.
Valves are OE sized. As an option by special request 0.8 mm oversized exhaust valves and 1mm oversized intake valves are available.

Lohen offers professional, in-house fitting for all products at our workshop in Eccleshall, Staffordshire. Here are the important things you need to know:
Fitting Cost - £1500. Includes installation and running on the dyno.
Fitting Time - 20 hours
Required Additional Items/Services - N14 Engine Installation kit is a comprehensive collection of parts that is suggested when installing a Lohen Crate Engine. Click Here For full details about the Lohen N14 Crate Engine Installation Kit - in summary, this includes 1 x running in oil, 2 x engine oil changes. oil filters, gaskets, coolant, water pump, thermostat, oil pressure sensor, necessary bolts
Lohen Recommends - Inspecting clutch and flywheel operation while the engine and gearbox are out and replacing them as necessary. It's also an ideal time to add a differential for a performance upgrade. Consider the Quaife ATB for road and track day use or the 3J Driveline LSD for track specific work. The addition of Samco boost and coolant hose kits is advisable for the high-performance engine. We'll also discuss your intended use to specify the correct oil for the application and engine build specification.
Refunds are available within 14 days after delivery for products that are unused and are in original packaging. Special order goods are non-refundable.
Products returned to us in imperfect, non-resalable condition will not qualify for a refund.
Products that are faulty due to the manufacturing process are refundable under the manufacturer's warranty for a limited time specified in the manufacturer's terms and conditions.
These do not apply if the product has been fitted incorrectly or mis-used, motorsport use could further reduce the manufacturer's warranty. If an order is cancelled or refunded the buyer is responsible for the return of the goods to such address as directed by the supplier and is at the consumer's sole expense. This does not affect your statutory rights.
