Before we even started we had some issues that needed resolving, dyno testing showed intake temperatures were in excess of 50 degrees C. With a warm weekend upon us, this needed resolving. High intake temperatures will hamper performance and increase the risk of engine damage.
The car was purchased with an unknown intercooler on it, further, removing the front bumper revealed signs of heavy damage to the intercooler. We decided to swap this out for the reliable and reasonably priced offering from Airtec. After installing the intercooler, we tested the GP on the dyno again. Not only did we pick up a couple of extra horsepower, but intake temperatures were under control and not exceeding 45 degrees C, even across multiple runs and with an ambient temperature of 28 degrees C on test, this proved a good step forward to allow the car to make power and run safely.
Stepping foot onto the iconic Brands Hatch circuit, a surge of anticipation filled the air as I embarked on a new chapter of my racing career. As a passionate mechanic and a newcomer to the track, I was determined to seize the opportunity and make the most of the upcoming weekend. With meticulous preparation and the support of Lohen, my car was primed and ready for the challenges that lay ahead.
An Enthusiastic Start:
I wanted modifications that would not only give me the best track performance but would also be suitable for the road as well. Each adjustment and modification is made with this in mind and with anticipation to improve in the future.
Here is a list of the modifications made for Brands Hatch:
Lohen Rear Control Arms
- These control arms are well balanced weighing only 641g per arm, and are adjustable allowing me to adjust camber and toe to suit my requirements.
Nankang AR1 Tyres
- The AR-1 is a faster, more refined track tyre, with only one compound option and with all tyres being produced with 5.5mm tread depth, the AR-1 is positioning itself among the greats of the track tyre market.
Powerflex Bushes
- We used a mixed range of Powerflex bushes to stiffen up the chassis and to ensure the car was going in the direction I wanted. I opted for Black Series Bushes on the front, and Purple Bushes on the rear, this made the rear chassis softer and gave me more control behind the wheel.
Ohlins Coilovers
- For over 40 years Öhlins Racing have been delivering custom car performance suspension, service and support to the world's best teams and drivers, it only made sense.
Alta Rear Anti-Roll Bar
- This allowed me to sharpen up the handling and gave me adjustability for precise and direct steering due to the reduction in body roll.
Safety Devices Rear Roll Cage
- Safety first, with future prospects of getting a full cage.
With my car gleaming after a thorough cleaning and all the necessary adjustments and checks completed, I felt confident in my preparation, ready to embrace the experiences that awaited me.
Friday arrived, and with it, a profound eagerness to conquer the unknowns of Brands Hatch. The thrill of the first-time encounter fueled my excitement, knowing that each turn and straight would test my skills behind the wheel and prove each modification that was made.
Mastering the Practice Sessions:
As Saturday morning dawned, a wave of anticipation washed over me once again as I returned to the circuit. The practice sessions loomed, and I eagerly attended the driver briefing, a mix of nerves and determination coursing through my veins. It was during these practice sessions that I became intimately acquainted with the recent modifications made to my car, courtesy of Lohen. The installation of powerflex bushes had injected enhanced stability and grip, while a larger rear anti-roll bar provided a more assertive ride. These fantastic Lohen parts proved their worth as I put them to the test on the track.
Conquering Challenges:
Despite the exhilaration of the practice session, I quickly realized that my car was grappling with significant understeer. Not one to back down from a challenge, I swiftly adjusted the rear anti-roll bar to a more aggressive setting, determined to rectify the issue. The result was remarkable—a more balanced and settled ride, instilling newfound confidence within me. However, as ambient and track temperatures rose, effective tyre management emerged as a critical priority. Nevertheless, I persevered, pushing myself to the limit and achieving a commendable 57.06 seconds as my fastest lap time in the session.
Qualifying Triumph:
With qualifying on the horizon, I set my sights on a consistent lap time of 56 seconds. Round after round, I met my goal, gradually growing more comfortable with the car's capabilities. The thrill of competition pushed me to the edge, harnessing every ounce of skill and determination to secure a competitive position for the final race.
Fine-tuning for Success:
Saturday night brought with it an opportunity for further setup adjustments, aimed at enhancing the car's cornering abilities and eradicating any lingering understeer. With meticulous precision, I increased the rear suspension height and adjusted the rear toe, striving for optimal performance. Though these modifications led to noticeable improvements, I recognized that there was still untapped potential waiting to be unlocked. Ultimately, I triumphed, dipping into my desired 55-second range. However, I remain eager for further progress in future races.
Future Modifications and Exciting Challenges:
Looking ahead to future races, I am eagerly preparing for my return to Brands Hatch in September for round 7. In collaboration with Lohen, we have identified the next set of modifications that will elevate my car's performance to new heights. I need more control arms, camber top mounts, and more damper adjustments, which will allow me to reach optimal setup and better suit Oulton Park.
The installation of camber top mounts for the front will facilitate smoother cornering and increased grip in the heavily cambered sections, offering a competitive advantage. Furthermore, incorporating additional rear Lohen control arms will enable a more aggressive setup, fostering enhanced rotation and ultimately shaving off valuable seconds to propel me to a higher level of competition.
Conclusion:
As I reflect on my thrilling journey at Brands Hatch, I am immensely grateful for the support from Lohen. Their exceptional parts and expertise have undoubtedly played a pivotal role in my improved performance on the track. The upcoming race at Oulton in July for round 5 holds the promise of further progress, and I eagerly anticipate pushing my limits once again. With each race, I am reminded of the immense potential within me and the boundless opportunities that lie ahead on this exhilarating journey with Lohen by my side.
